A British man has become a millionaire overnight. Once pessimistic he’d ever regain access to his own crypto wallet, it was his wife’s constant encouragement that pushed him to keep trying.
“Chris” (his full name remains anonymous) invested £1,500 (GBP) in Bitcoin back in 2011, after a friend convinced him the asset would grow significantly. Chris made this investment through a platform called Intersango, previously known as Britcoin, where his Bitcoin was stored.
A Frozen Account and a Painful Wait
That Bitcoin exchange later ran into trouble. In 2014, Chris tried to withdraw his funds, which by then were worth roughly $5,400. To his shock, he found his account had been frozen.
“It was pretty shocking when it happened. That wasn’t money I wanted to lose,” Chris told LBC.
Unfortunately for Chris, there wasn’t much he could do. The company wasn’t even regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (the UK’s financial services regulator). All he could do was watch the value of his Bitcoin keep climbing.
“It was really painful watching the price of Bitcoin keep going up. Eventually, I stopped tracking it because I thought, ‘What’s the point, that asset is gone,'” he recalled.
A Recovery That Changed Everything
Earlier this year, however, Chris’s wife suggested he reach out to a company that specializes in recovering lost cryptocurrency. As it turned out, the process was far easier than trying to remember an old password. Remarkably, within a matter of months, the company successfully recovered Chris’s funds.
At that point, the value had grown to roughly £3.3 million (equivalent to about $4,480,000, or Rp 79.3 billion). Understandably, this felt like a once-in-a-lifetime stroke of luck, delivered practically overnight.
What’s Next for Chris
Reportedly, Chris plans to cash out part of his funds to buy a bigger house, in order to accommodate his mother-in-law, who has physical limitations. The rest, he says, will remain invested in Bitcoin.
